[Fixed] Why is My OBS Recording Choppy?

“My OBS recording is very choppy whenever I try to record a game.” How to fix OBS stuttering recording? This tutorial is here to help.

When you use the free OBS to record desktop activities, you may encounter the situation that OBS recording is choppy. Why is my OBS recording choppy? It may due to:

  • Insufficient system resources
  • High bitrate settings
  • Advanced game settings
  • Insufficient frame rate and resolution
  • ...

Check the following methods to solve OBS recording choppy problem.

Fix 1. Check the System Requirements

Check if your computer meets the minimum system requirements of OBS.

  • 64-bit processor and OS
  • At least 4 GB of RAM
  • At least 600 MB of free space
  • Windows 10 or 11

Fix 2. Lower Your Game Settings

OBS has limits on resolution and frame, so advanced game settings may exceed its limits. Please check your game's settings and lower them.

Fix 3. Configure the Frame Rate and Resolution

Step 1. Open OBS Studio and head to Settings from the main interface.

Step 2. Click Video and select the preferred FPS rate (normally 60) and resolution under Common FPS values.

Step 3. Click OK to finish the process.
